meet Emma
“To swim in a volcanic landscape shaped 60 million years ago, in waters once sailed by Vikings, and off beaches with such deep history, like Iona where kings were once laid to rest… it still blows my mind. And I swim here all the time.”
Emma MacDonald is the founder of Wild Hebridean Swimming and an experienced open water coach. After beginning her swimming career in Australia, she has worked with swimmers of all abilities, from complete beginners to triathletes.
Now based on the Isle of Mull with her family, Emma leads small, welcoming, cold water experiences that help people build confidence, connect with the sea, and enjoy the wellbeing benefits of swimming in nature. Alongside the running of her business, Emma sits on the Boards of Tobermory Harbour Association, Visit Mull & Iona and Argyll & the Isles Tourism Cooperative, and is actively involved in community projects, including running local men’s and women’s cold water dipping groups.
More than just a swimming trip

We are local, experienced guides who understand the local waters and how they are affected by the weather here. But our retreats are more than swimming. They’re about feeling connected: to the landscape, the history and the people who live here.
To walk ancient paths; stand among ruins that remain from communities once forced from the land.
To sit in places shaped by those who came before.
To touch the pink granite that was once quarried here and sent out across the world.
We share stories, not just routes, offering a glimpse into what it has been, and still is, to live and work here.
Don’t Just Take our word for it!
