getting to Oban
In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and help keep traffic to a minimum on the island, we suggest getting to Oban by public transport as it’s easy and beautifully scenic.
From Airports by Train or Bus If you are flying into Glasgow, there is a fast and frequent Airport Bus service (the 500) that takes you from right outside the airport terminal to Glasgow Queen St Station.
🚂 The train departs from Glasgow Queen St Station at 12.20 (check timetables as departure time is adjusted by a few minutes depending on the time of year). The 3 hour train journey is particularly stunning as it winds through the glens and along the loch.
If you are flying into Edinburgh, you can take a bus or tram from the airport to Edinburgh Waverley Station (the main train station). The bus (Airlink 100) takes about 30 minutes, and the tram takes about 35 minutes. Trains from Edinburgh to Oban typically require a change at Glasgow Queen Street Station. The entire train journey can take around 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on the connections.
🚎 There are direct buses from Edinburgh Airport to Oban, operated by Citylink (Bus service 914 or 926). The journey takes around 3.5 to 4 hours, and buses typically depart throughout the day. This is a more direct option than the train and can be more convenient if you want to avoid transfers.
From Airports by Car
You can rent a car from Edinburgh Airport and the journey is ~125 miles (200 km) and takes ~3 hours
– Exit Edinburgh Airport onto the M9 motorway.
– Continue on M9 past Falkirk and Stirling.
– Merge onto the A84 at Stirling, following signs for Callander.
– Continue on the A85 through Crianlarich.
– Follow the A85 west towards Oban.
You can rent a car from Glasgow Airport and the journey is ~90 miles (145 km) and takes ~2.5 hours.
– Exit Glasgow Airport and take the M8 west towards Erskine Bridge.
– Cross the Erskine Bridge and take the A82 towards Loch Lomond.
– Follow the A82 along Loch Lomond, passing Luss and Tarbet.
– At Crianlarich, switch to the A85 and continue west to Oban.
getting to Mull
There are three main ferry crossings to Mull.
Oban (mainland) to Craignure (Mull) Travelling from the south, this is the quickest route to Mull and usually offers the largest number of sailings each day. It is a 45-minute to an hour’s crossing. We advise to book your sailing at least six weeks before you travel. The CALMAC ferry terminal for the crossing to Mull is right across from the train and bus stations.
🚶♀️ Foot passengers need to be there 10 minutes before departure.
🚗 Check in for cars is half an hour prior to departure. We’d recommend signing up for service updates and alerts.
Lochaline (mainland) to Fishnish (Mull) If you are in the Fort William area or heading to Mull from the North, you can take the Corran Ferry across Loch Linnhe and then drive to Lochaline, before getting the ferry across to Mull. With this service, you can’t book in advance, you just turn up and wait your turn. It is a 20-minute sailing over to Mull.
Kilchoan (mainland) to Tobermory (Mull) You can’t book in advance on this service and you’re only likely to use this one if you are coming from Skye, Mallaig or the Ardnamurchan area, because otherwise the Lochaline to Fishnish route is likely to be quicker. It is a 35-minute crossing.
